They say your life can change in the blink of an eye.  For us it wasn’t a blink of the eye, it was boarding a flight on a one-way ticket that completely changed our lives.

We had no idea we were starting a whole new phase in our lives as we boarded that flight from Perth to Los Angeles on March 5th 2012.

When we left Australia we had no itinerary and no idea how long we were going to be traveling for.  We had prepared for a long-term trip, by selling all of our belongings and giving up our jobs, but the reality was, we had no idea how long we would be traveling for.

There were so many variables; Would we enjoy being ‘homeless’? Would we be able to make our savings last? Would we miss our loved ones back home? Would it be as amazing as we imagined it would be?

500 days of travel - Barbados Beach

Of course now, after 500 days of travel, we can safely say we do enjoy being ‘homeless’; We have managed to make our savings last; We do miss our loved ones but not enough to go home (sorry guys!); And yes, it has been even more amazing than we imagined!

‘Amazing’ doesn’t seem to cut it though.  In the past 500 days we have been living life to the fullest.  We have been to so many beautiful places all over the globe.  We have met so many wonderful people and have had more experiences in the last 500 days than we have in the many years before.  We even made a video about it!

But most of all, we have shown that full-time travel is achievable if it’s something you really want to do.  We have learned how to travel on less money than it would cost to live at home.  We have no mortgage, no utility bills, no car payments – Nada!  You cannot imagine now freeing that feels!

We are living life on our terms.  It might be unconventional, it might go against what we are bought up believing to be ‘normal’, but for us, it is exactly where we are meant to be.  Will we settle down some day?  Of course one day we will want to lay down roots again but that day is a long way in the future as far as we are concerned! For now we are going to live life to the fullest and enjoy every single moment.

In 500 days there have been so many wonderful experiences, but here are a few that top the list:

500 days of travel - Brooklyn Bridge

New York City

What’s not to love about the Big Apple!  There is a vibe in this city that I am yet to find anywhere else in the world.  And it draws me in.  There is an endless list of things to see and do, places to eat and streets to walk.  This city is amazing and she will always have a piece of my heart.

500 days of travel - Costa Rica Waterfall

Costa Rica

As nature and wildlife lovers Costa Rica was a no brainer.  However, we had no idea how much we were going to love this small but beautiful country.  We spent 7 weeks here which gave us time to really get to know Costa Rica.  Our favorite part was obviously the wildlife we encountered such as sloths (our favorite!), monkeys, reptiles, birds, butterflies and so much more.

500 days of travel - Parc de la Ciutadella

This was another place where our expectations were completely blown out of the water. Who knew this city was so beautiful!  Between the architecture, the parks, the beach, the people and the food, Barcelona was a sensory overload.  We’d happily go back and spend more time in this amazing city.

500 days of travel - Ponts des Arts Paris

I wrote about my experience in Paris, about the emotions the City of Love bought out in me.  It was a twenty year old dream that came true but also, it was when it really hit me that I was living my dream life.  It was a very emotional time for me, one that I will never forget.
