It is common knowledge that the Alps are one of the most stunning parts of Europe in terms of nature, and the section that lies in Switzerland is no exception to that rule. Thousands of tourists come from across the globe every year to hike, ski, and get involved in any other outdoor activity you can think of to get themselves in touch with the breath-taking views of the snow-capped mountains.
Jungfrachjoch is one of the most accessible mountain passes through the Alps in Switzerland, lying in between Mönch and Jungfrau, two mountains that make up one of the most iconic pictures of scenery in this region. It is the lowest point in this mountain ridge but it still lies at 3,471m (11,388ft) above sea level.
You can get to the pass by taking a train from Interlaken up to Jungfraujoch station, which is the highest railway station in Europe. This railway journey through these snowy lands is one of the most beautiful railway journeys you can take in Europe, and gives the less adventurous amongst us an opportunity to see this incredible part of Switzerland.
Once you arrive up at Jungfraujoch, you’ll see that they call this area the ‘Top of Europe’, as it’s one of the highest points in the continent that you can reach easily, without having to be an expert mountaineer! The Swiss have really capitalized on the accessibility of this area, and up here there are even hotels to stay in and restaurants you can dine in. Nothing could be quite as special as sitting at one of the highest points in Europe, sipping a glass of wine, having a bite to eat and drinking in the view around you. There are very few places in Europe that can beat those views!
Once you’ve arrived up at Jungfraujoch, you can go on a number of different hikes, or simply relax and take in the scenery. Here you can see the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains, as well as Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. Some of these views will involve taking a little trek to go and find them, but they are all well worth it, and up here you do truly feel like you’re standing on the top of Europe.
The more adventurous amongst us will also have plenty to do in this area. There are several biking trails, allowing you to glide through the mountain passes and cover a lot of ground to really explore this region. If you’re really looking for some adrenaline, why not try your hand at some paragliding, so you can sail through the air in between the regions peak – an experience that you certainly wouldn’t forget in a hurry.
There are other activities at the top, such as, a walk through an Ice Palace, ski or sled hire for some fun in the snow and watch a panoramic movie about life up here in the Alps.
Whatever kind of traveler you are, Jungfraujoch is the kind of place that anyone can enjoy. If you’re of the outdoorsy persuasion, you’ll definitely find something here to keep you entertained. If you’re looking for something a bit more relaxed, head out to Jungfraujoch and grab some dinner – the backdrop alone will make you feel like you’re in the lap of luxury, and on top of the world.
