After staying in Cancun for a week we decided to explore other parts of Mexico.  We rented a car and went west heading towards the capital of the Yucatan Peninsular, Merida, where we would stay a few nights.

On the way through we had already stopped at the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza and then accidentally stumbled across the very colorful city of Izamal.

Izamal, which is known as the Yellow City, is about 45 minutes east of Merida and around 3 hours west of Cancun.  This wasn’t a planed stop.  We got off the main highway to see the of the local towns – always a better way to go instead of keeping to the highways!  So when we started to see all these building painted in a bright yellow hue we had to stop and explore this city and get a closer look.

Izamal is known to be a magical city which you could read about here.  Here is a photographic journey through the Yellow City – Izamal.
